According to the 2006 Nielsen’s report, Rueda maintains its leading position in the white wine sector with AO.
Actually, the 2006 Nielsen’s report, which is financed by the Castile and León ITA, was submitted yesterday to the Rueda Control Board itself.
The survey reveals that Rueda Appellation of Origin has increased 7% in 2006. This figure represents a 4.6% market share within the Spanish Appellations of Origin as a whole. This means this Appellation has been able to jump from the 7th to the 6th place.
This figure confirms that regular growth of the Rueda wines is above the average of the global AO wine market. Furthermore, this is a very positive data indeed as the whole wine market has experienced a 2% reduction in terms of consumption, which resulted in a sales figure of 646 million of liters.
Regarding distribution channels, the trend in Rueda A.O. wine demand, as for the whole A.O. wine market, is more positive in the food channel, with a 22% increase, which leads to a 16.5% of its sales. On the other hand, hotel and restaurant channel only increases a 4%, which represents total sales of 83.5%.
By regions, Rueda A O benefits from a good situation in Madrid, Centre and Northern Centre. The introduction of Rueda A.O. in regions where it has been historically difficult to success, such as Galicia and Barcelona, is worth mentioning.
