The vineyard. Pruning and age.

Type of pruning

Depending on the grape variety and the conduction system employed, the more common pruning types are:

  • Short pruning: Viura, Palomino, Tempranillo and Garnacha.
  • Long pruning:
    • Double Guyot system: Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (Wire-Trained Vines)
    • Rod: Verdejo (Bushed Vines)

Average age of the vineyard

The implementation of state-of-the-art winegrowing technologies and European aid for the restructuring of vineyards have lead to a major rejuvenation in the Rueda vineyards. Only the Palomino variety shows signs of excessive aging, and its neutral character does not adapt to today’s Rueda wines. The Regulatory Council is therefore not authorising new plantations of this particular variety, which will most probably be removed and substituted with Verdejo grapes.
